How often should you flush a water heater? Learn why sediment builds up, how often to flush in hard-water Southern California, and when to DIY vs. call a pro.

Flushing your water heater is the routine of draining the tank to clear out the sediment that collects at the bottom. For most homes the right cadence is once a year, but in the hard water common across Southern California, every 6 to 12 months is smarter. Regular flushing is one of the cheapest, highest-impact things you can do to protect a storage tank water heater and keep it running efficiently.

Why sediment builds up

Tap water carries dissolved minerals — mainly calcium and magnesium. When that water is heated, the minerals precipitate out and settle as a gritty layer at the bottom of the tank. The harder your water, the faster the layer grows. Much of coastal and inland Southern California sits on notoriously hard water, so local tanks accumulate sediment faster than the national average. That is the core reason flushing frequency here leans toward the aggressive end.

When flushing matters most — and the failure mode it prevents

Left alone, sediment causes a chain of problems. It insulates the burner from the water above it, so the unit burns more fuel and takes longer to recover. It creates the telltale popping or rumbling sound as water boils through the trapped grit. It accelerates corrosion of the tank floor, shortening overall lifespan. And in severe cases it clogs the drain valve, making the tank harder to service later. Flushing on schedule heads off every one of those outcomes before they cost you efficiency — or the whole unit.

How often should you flush?

  • Standard households: once a year.
  • Hard-water areas (most of SoCal): every 6 to 12 months.
  • Very hard water or heavy usage: consider every 6 months, and ask about a water softener or whole-home filtration to slow buildup at the source.

DIY vs. calling a pro

A flush is a reasonable DIY job if you are comfortable with the steps: shut off power or gas, turn off the cold supply, attach a hose to the drain valve, and drain into a safe location until the water runs clear. The catches: the water is scalding hot, an old plastic drain valve can crack or clog, and on a neglected tank the sediment may be too compacted to rinse out fully. If your tank has never been flushed, is making noise, or the drain valve won't cooperate, a professional flush — ideally paired with an anode rod check — is the safer call.
